Paintings
Roger St Barbe's oil paintings are a completely separate oeuvre from his etchings, and must be seen 'in the flesh' to appreciate their impact. Their aim is an unsentimental rendition of nature and its power of attraction, in a style which is partly objective and partly subjective - drawn with the same rigour as the etchings, but also exploring the mental process of painting itself, a combination of intellect and spontaneity. The latter comes particularly to the fore in his more recent gouache paintings, while his oil paintings include many panoramas of the Devon and Dorset landscape. Alas, it is not possible to keep an up-to-date list of available paintings, but these ones recently sold will give you an impression.
